Join Criteria

Listed below are the Qualification Criteria to join the Registry

We accept the following Voluntary Credit Types for registration:

  • Voluntary Vintage Carbon Credits from Pre-1990 forests (VVCC®)

  • Voluntary Restorative Credits from Post-1989 forests (VRCC®)

  • Biodiversity Credits from full species replanting and restoration of denuded habitats (BIOD)

  • Blue Carbon Credits from marine or freshwater environments (BCC)

  • Voluntary Carbon Credits from wetlands, peatlands, and other natural environments (VCW)

  • Voluntary Carbon Credits from non-nature-based proven technologies, eg. hydro power, wind power (VCPT®)

All credits must be independently authenticated using proven methodologies and must meet our Qualification Criteria and pass an Eligibility Check. An Information Package must be submitted for listing.

Credit Quality Rating - each credit package will be rated according to our Credit Quality Rating (CQR) system, see below. Project developers will have an opportunity to discuss the credit quality rating before it is made public.

Qualification Criteria

  1. Land, forest or technology owner must have established legal title to the land, forest or technology and must own the land, forest, or technology itself. Cutting rights must be expired or surrendered

  2. Forests or habitats must not have any form of absolute legal protection from clearing, eg. forests or habitats in covenant areas, reserves, national parks do not qualify

  3. Forest and habitat owners legally commit to no clearance for at least 100 years by registering a notice on land title/s or equivalent

  4. Forests and habitats must be mapped professionally using Geographical Information Systems (GIS)

  5. Verification - forest and habitat credit yields are verified by a suitably qualified person or organisation to ISO 14064-2 standard and government guidance; or other acceptable methodology

  6. Validation - verification report is validated by a third party to ISO 14064-3 standard or other acceptable methodology

  7. Non-nature based technologies must provide similar independent evidence of legitimate credit generation

  8. Information Package - a ZIP file of authentication and monitoring reports together with ground photographs and video must be provided for public listing on the project's page

  9. Projects in challenged communities (below national poverty line) must include a Community Development Plan that clearly sets out how the local community will benefit from the project. Progress with the CDP must be included in the Monitoring Programme. These reports must be included in the Information Package

  10. Monitoring occurs every 5-10 years by field inspection on site as appropriate, spot audits at any time with 24 hours’ notice

  11. More credits may be issued as the forest or habitat grows, depending on forest or habitat age and health

  12. Insurance for fire, storm, temporary adverse event must be held by owner

  13. Forest or habitat owner must execute effective pest management programme

  14. Penalty for credit loss = loss + 100%

  15. Forest, habitat or technology owner must agree to host credit buyers on site for forest, habitat or technology inspections. These visits will be carefully curated by CEQ. They do not include a requirement to reveal proprietary information

  16. Previously discredited methodologies will not be accepted

A           Good quality established tropical or temperate rain forest protected for 100 years, with forest stewardship and monitoring programme in place; or new forest that will meet this criteria

Other good quality established forest ecosystems protected for 100 years, with habitat enhancement programme underway; or new forest that will meet this criteria

C            Average quality established forest ecosystems protected for 100 years, with habitat enhancement programme underway; or new forest that will meet this criteria

Junk       Discredited authentication method or otherwise fake credits that meet no reliable verification or validation method; and or have no readily available direct contact details with project developer or stakeholders; and or do not directly benefit the community at the project site in challenged (below national poverty line) communities

Credit Quality Rating: Non-nature based

Credits from technology that achieves permanent removal or replacement of greenhouse gas emissions for 100 + years, and can be implemented within five years

Credits from technology that achieves permanent removal or replacement of greenhouse gas emissions for 100 + years, and can be implemented within 10 years

C            Credits from technology that achieves permanent removal or replacement of greenhouse gas emissions for 100 + years, and can be implemented within 25 years

Junk       Credits from unproven or discredited technologies or otherwise fake credits that meet no reliable verification or validation method; cannot be practically implemented within 25 years; and or projects have no readily available direct contact details with project developer or stakeholders; and or do not directly benefit the community at the project site in challenged (below national poverty line) communities

Note: Existing or new nature-based credits are rated higher than non-nature based credits because photosynthesis is proven technology that can be instituted faster and cheaper than any current non-nature based technology.
